Backgammon – 3 Main Plans

[ English ]

In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 main plans used. You need to be agile enough to hop between strategies almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time dire straits taking into account that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be used when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is important for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other spare checkers to move! In this case, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
