In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 chief tactics used. You must be agile enough to hop between tactics almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This is comprised of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to barricade in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.
The Blitz
This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time calamity taking into account that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It should be used when you are significantly behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, because you do not have other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a great idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
