In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 basic game plans used. You must be able to switch techniques quickly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to block in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable strategy at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.
The Blitz
This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious difficulty since they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!
The Backgame
This tactic is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at least two of your checkers.) It should be played when you are extremely behind as this plan greatly improves your circumstances. The best places for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this case!
