Backgammon – 3 General Techniques

In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 main game plans employed. You must be able to switch strategies quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to block in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the match. You can build the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time difficulty because they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be played when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The best places for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opponent is getting their checkers home, taking into account that you don’t have other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
